Exclusive: Digitalism Remix 'Syndicate' Theme Song

EA Games gives MTV News an exclusive preview of German house duo's remix for 2012 reboot of classic video game.

EA Games is gearing up to reboot its super successful video game franchise "Syndicate," and this time it'll be set to a pumped-up electronic dance music soundtrack. Skrillex's remix of the "Syndicate" theme song has already surfaced on the game's Facebook page, and on Tuesday, German electro-house outfit Digitalism's take on the track is set to drop as well.

For the non-gamers, next year's "Syndicate" release is a return to the classic video game series that first emerged in 1993, which allowed players to engage in assassinations and other diabolical adventures — all in an effort to advance their syndicate to the #1 spot. The upcoming 2012 version, due on February 21, will shift the point of view from fixed isometric style to first-person shooter.

And given Digitalism's origins, it seems only fitting the duo would be involved in the project: Jens "Jence" Moelle and Ismail "Isi" Tüfekçi (a.k.a. Digitalism) cite now-classic Commodore 64 video games and French house among their early influences.

" 'Syndicate' is a game classic, which is now being brought back to life," Digitalism told MTV News via email. "For us as electronic music-lovers, who grew up with games and love soundtracks, there was no way around reinterpreting the 'Syndicate' theme!

"So what we did in our WWII bunker [recording] studio was imagine being in the game, creating a fast-paced atmosphere, turning all the compressors up and mixing classic soundtrack elements with techno. We wanted to make sure it sounds dangerous, et voila, here we go."

Fans can download Digitalism's remix of the "Syndicate" theme for free on the game's Facebook page Tuesday. And you can catch Digitalism on the road again soon. After headlining the HARD Festival over the summer, the pair are set to return to the U.S. on a North American tour at the end of November, where they'll showcase cuts from their sophomore album, I Love You, Dude.

Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj And Ke$ha 'Till The World Ends' Remix Leaks

Reworked tune features an opening verse by Minaj as Ke$ha sings atop Spears' vocals throughout the song.
By James Dinh

Britney Spears isn't the only pop titan dancing until the world ends: Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha have joined forces to add a new spin on an all-female remix of Femme Fatale's second single, "Till the World Ends."

The reworked dance anthem, which leaked online Friday (April 22), appears to have surfaced earlier than expected as noted by a series of countdowns on all three of the stars' websites.

Mixing the dance tune's original sonic swirls with heavier bass, Britney tourmate Minaj starts off the remix by throwing down an aggressive verse, in which she calls out a female hater: "A-A-A-A-A-AYE!/ Chimpanzees is hatin', but I take it all in stride/ Put her in a jungle with bananas on the side/ Told you they'd revive your career, but somebody lied/ I ain't talkin' poultry when I say this chicken's fried."

After Minaj spits a few introductory bars, Spears delivers the song's first verse before an introduction for the all-star trio. "It's Britney, bitch. I'm Nicki Minaj and that's Ke$ha!" the Young Money MC proclaims.

Ke$ha, who originally wrote the track for the pop princess, takes part in singing the club-ready track's chorus. Spears soon takes back control of the song as Ke$ha shadows the singer's lines toward the end of the second verse and bridge. Unlike the original version, the "Till the World Ends" remix also features a stuttering dubstep dance break.

News of a star-studded collaboration was hinted earlier this week when producer Dr. Luke tweeted, "@NICKIMINAJ killed it tonight!!!! thanks!!!"

Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year

Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.
By James Montgomery with MTV News staff

"I'm bewildered," Robert Plant said onstage as he accepted the Grammy Album of the Year award with Alison Krauss on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."

He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because Raising Sand, which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect Grammy album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.

You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his Led Zeppelin days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.

Really, she's the key to Sand's success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, Sand was released.

And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain.

And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on Sand. His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified.

To date, Sand has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.

One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album.

"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really good record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards."

Nickelback Party Hard, Get Deep On Here And Now

Band's November 21 album kicks off with two wildly different singles, 'When We Stand Together' and 'Bottoms Up.'
By James Montgomery

Nickelback's Chad Kroeger
Photo: MTV News

Late last month, ahead of the release of their (sure to be colossal no matter what you think ) Here and Now album, Nickelback premiered a pair of singles — the pro-social "When We Stand Together" and the pro-party "Bottoms Up" — which seem to have only one thing in common: Nickelback wrote both of them.

After all, one's a positively massive power ballad with lyrics like "Hand in hand forever/ That's when we all win," and the other is, well, basically about drinking every substance under the sun, a list that includes, but is not limited to: Jim Beam, Jack Daniel's, Black-Tooth Grins — Dimebag certainly would've approved — and, of course, "straight gasoline." You can probably guess which is which.

But if you think "Stand Together" and "Bottoms Up" represent a Nickelback veering in two wildly dissimilar directions, well, just wait until you hear the rest of Here and Now, as the band told MTV News earlier this week.

"I mean, it's not Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall or something; it doesn't have this theme. It's more all over the map than those two [songs], for sure," frontman Chad Kroeger explained. "Because, when you play a Nickelback show, I mean, there is every range of person that you could possibly imagine on the face of the earth [in the audience], and you couldn't peg one on the street to save your life. I think we can all pick out a Slipknot fan, but it's tough to pick out a Nickelback fan, because they're all so different."

And that was the challenge presented to the band on Now, which contains a whole lot of party-ready chuggers, plus a couple more, uh, conscious tunes, too. But though you'd think penning songs about global suffering would be tough for Kroeger and Co., well, you'd be wrong. Because, quite frankly, it's writing the hard-charging, harder-drinking numbers that keeps the band up at night. After all, partying is something they take pretty seriously over at Nickelback H.Q.

"It's a drinking anthem. I mean, it's harder to write those songs than it is to write those social-awareness type songs, it really is," Kroeger admitted. "Because for us, they've got to be good. Some of the stuff's got to be a little tongue-in-cheek, there's got to be some clever stuff there, you know, and you've got to be descriptive. But when you get done listening to it, you need to have the feeling of just wanting to grab a bottle of Jack. And I think we got there, because we'd bring friends over all the time and it was just like, 'You are now a test subject! Hit play; turn it up nice and loud.' And the song's over and they'd be like, 'I want to drink. I want to drink something right now.' And we were like 'Yes!' "

Are you a Nickelback fan? Share your thoughts on the band in the comments!

'Rum Diary' A 'Love Letter To Hunter,' Johnny Depp Says

Aaron Eckhart and Giovanni Ribisi also talk about writer Hunter S. Thompson's impact on the film.
By Ahsika Sanders, with reporting by Kara Warner

Johnny Depp in "The Rum Diary"
Photo: FilmDistrict

From the first few moments of the trailer's island music, bright colors and eye-catching castmembers, "The Rum Diary" looks like a whimsical vacation to paradise realized onscreen.

Based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson during the author's own travels to Puerto Rico in the late '50s, the film casts "Pirates of the Caribbean" leading man Johnny Depp as the writer Paul Kemp, who struggles to find a balance between work, play and the island's increasingly tumultuous politics.

When MTV News caught up with the film's stars, they explained how the film is a fitting tribute to Thompson's final story, as well as to his legacy.

"The whole thing is really a love letter to Hunter," said Depp, whose friendship with Thompson led to the discovery of the late author's unpublished manuscript and eventually the idea to make it into a film. "The film from the very inception, opening that cardboard box and finding the manuscript to 'The Rum Diary' and saying to Hunter, 'What's wrong with you? Why don't you publish this?' and him saying, 'Well we should produce this,' the chain of events that happened over the years and then us trying ignorantly to drum up the money was just a very funny experience," Depp said of the story's journey from page to screen.

"Even though my partner is not right next to me, we're going to still produce this film together, and ultimately we did," Depp said of deciding to move forward with the production after Thompson's death in 2005. "Even if his presence, if he wasn't visible, we still produced the film together."

Aaron Eckhart stars alongside Depp in a second villainous role since his stint as Harvey "Two-Face" Dent in "The Dark Knight." Depp's love and passion for Thompson and his work made the film a more meaningful experience, Eckhart said.

"I think that Johnny has taken up the mantle and has preserved his legacy and is now offering all those people out there who have never heard of Hunter, an opportunity to be familiar with his work," he said. "Hunter was always there. He always had his chair, his empty chair on set with us, and Johnny and [director] Bruce [Robinson] had a ritual that they did every day ... but his spirit was always there."

"Avatar" bad guy Giovanni Ribisi added that, for him, the story was about "having a voice and maintaining your independence and your individuality" and that Thompson's perception of that ideal is universal and timely.

"I think Hunter S. Thompson was such a strong factor in a time in the '60s, he was almost the fulcrum for that [time], where people were waking up," he said. "It was about a rebellion against this capitalist structure and the mise en scene in the story. In the book you know where America is coming and really doing its thing to this beautiful culture Puerto Rico, that setting is just incredible. That for me is what it's about. I think, as much as I hate to say it, I think it's very apropos to today's psychology."

Celebrating his front page treatment on the publication's latest offering, Gerard Butler was toasted at the Los Angeles Confidential Magazine men's issue cover party in West Hollywood, California on Saturday night (October 29).

The "Bounty Hunter" hunk took to the Palihouse Holloway venue looking studly in a grey suit as he joined fellow guests including Rose McGowan, Amanda Righetti and Nazanin Boniadi.

As for his cover issue of Los Angeles Confidential, Gerard spoke with the magazine about a number of topics including his latest movie "Machine Gun Preacher" and life in the spotlight.

Of being a celebrity, the 41-year-old Scottish actor dished, ?It?s almost like being successful makes certain people feel like they have the right to be completely invasive and aggressive in your life. That?s what really bothers me. I can?t often go to Starbucks without literally having five different cameras pointing at me."

He added, "You smile and wave, but really you think, I don?t even want to do this anymore. I just want to go?.At the end of the day, I love making movies.?

Jay-Z, Kanye West's Throne Tour Has Thrilling Liftoff

Regal rap titans bounced through Watch the Throne cuts and solo smashes in a set marked by a gaudy display of hits.

Jay-Z and Kanye West kick off Watch the Throne tour in Atlanta

ATLANTA, Georgia — Not even a stormy night could stop the regal reign of the Throne. On Friday, Jay-Z and Kanye West opened up their Watch the Throne Tour in Atlanta. While the WTT album has been noted for its opulent displays of wealth, Hov and Yeezy's show will be marked by the duo's overabundance of hit records.

The doors to the Philips Arena opened at 7:30 p.m. ET and, with no scheduled show opener, the house DJ played old slow jams like the Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets," Little Beaver's "Get Into the Party Life" and Hank Crawford's "Wildflower" — all songs that have been sampled by Kanye and Jay at one time or another. Still, the subtle measure wasn't nearly enough to keep fans satisfied. By 9 p.m. ET, the crunked-up crowd was restless and salivating for the night's stars.

With the house lights low and fans pumped, the multilayered instrumental from "H.A.M." came blaring through the sound system. The initial WTT track has been criticized by some as too over-the-top and too much unlike anything in Jay and 'Ye's respective catalogs, but the helter-skelter mix of crashing symbals, bleeps, beeps and bombastic bass was clearly built specifically for sports stadiums and grand auditoriums.

The build was perfect, even if the execution wasn't. Kanye commandeered a rising platform at the front of the stage, while Jay simultaneously occupied a similar lift that was situated on the floor in the middle of the crowd. Within moments, the duo were elevated in unison towering above the audience, volleying verses from one side of the arena to the other. Jay stumbled vocally, though: His ear piece short-circuited and failed to properly feed him the music and his timing was clearly affected. For a time, Hov's raps were badly off beat.

But there were no fits and no cursing at the sound man. Instead, Jay fought through the malfunction, which lasted through the next song. While mid-verse on the dubstep-laced "Who Gon Stop Me," Jigga cued to have the music cut, then finished his bars a capella, buying time until the technical mistake was corrected. From there, perfection ensued.

"Otis" came early in the set. With a Givenchy-designed American flag flashing on the stage's main screens, the Throne bounced through their fan-fave with a youthful glee. Surprisingly, the Roc Boys performed a number of hyped-up Watch the Throne cuts in the first quarter of the show.

With the Throne tone set, Kanye disappeared from the stage while Jay got his rocks off spitting his 1997 street banger "Where I'm From." Throughout the night, Hov and Yeezy would trade off, rocking a few solo songs a piece, before coming together for something collaborative. 'Ye tore through "Can't Tell Me Nothing" and "Jesus Walks" all by himself, before Jigga reappeared for Yeezy's "Diamonds from Sierra Leone (Remix)."

Jay's "Public Service Announcement" and "You Don't Know" were played against Kanye's "Good Life" and "Power" in a sound clash of sorts. By the time the Louis Vuitton Don launched into the gut-wrenching "Runaway," he had hit his stride. He even remixed "Runaway," pleading with the crowd to hold on to their loved ones as he sang, "If you love somebody tonight, hold on real tight." It was effective as couples in the crowd, hugged, danced and two lovebirds even made out.

In a comical section of the set, Jay-Z and the College Dropout weaved a funny story line where their hits "Big Pimpin'," "Gold Digger" and "99 Problems" became a narrative for Jay to school his "little brother" on the opposite sex.

Kanye owned the outfit of the night. After one particular wardrobe change, he marched out to "Touch the Sky" sporting a tribal-type jacket, leather kilt, leather pants underneath and his glow-in-the-dark Air Yeezys. Hov's black Yankee snapback and matching hoodie were no match.

Every time the crowd thought the two-hour-plus show was over, it wasn't. First there was "N---as in Paris." The track's Will Farrell intro ("We're gonna skate to one song and one song only") brought on the moment that everyone was waiting for. As the Atlanta crowd bounced feverishly to the Hit Boy-produced single, Jay halted the proceedings midway: "Start that sh-- over," he barked as the Throne's most-energetic selection of the night brought the crowd to an apex.

Next was Jay's "Encore," followed by an inspirational rendition of "Made in America," complete with images of Martin Luther King Jr. and "sweet brother" Malcolm X flashing on the big screen. Finally, the Throne closed with the rocked-out "Why I Love You," saluting the crowd as they moseyed offstage. "Peace ATL, thanks for all the love. Goodnight," Jay-Z said.

On a night where the two kings put their wealth on full display, lucky for Atlanta, Jay and Kanye West were willing to share.

Frankie Jonas Takes Us Halloween Costume Shopping

Jonas Brothers' little bro talks about his upcoming role on 'R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour: The Series.'

NEW YORKFrankie Jonas may be the smallest of the Jonas brothers, but he certainly isn't short on personality. Frankie, like his three older brothers before him, is trying his hand at show business and will appear this weekend on "R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour: The Series."

Being that it is the season for all things creepy, the always swagged-out Frankie decided to bring MTV News along as he searched for the just-right Halloween costume.

"What we're doing here today, we are looking at the costumes and we're going costume shopping," he told MTV News at Abracadabra. "Which I'm really happy about, because I need to get a head-start on my costume."

Jonas picked two costumes — a zombie and Chucky from "Child's Play" — and he explained why, of all the costumes in the store, those made his final cut. "I chose the zombie because I was a zombie for two years in a row ... zombies, they're like the full-on. Everyone loves zombies," he said. "Zombies are the base of Halloween, 'cause you get dead, you get living and you get creepy.

"I like Chucky, 'cause it's really, like, no offense to Chucky, but he's kind of cheesy," the 11-year-old continued. "But that's what I like about him. I love old, cheesy horror movies. I love horror movies. My two favorites are probably 'Sweeney Todd' and the original 'Nightmare on Elm Street.' "

His episode of the series, titled "Pumpkinhead," will air Saturday on the Hub, and like any seasoned pro, Jonas is keeping the details a big secret.

"It's scary funny, but my episode full-on creeps you out. It's like if you mixed together intense with, like, super scary and then a little bit of comedy, and then you get [my episode]," he explained. "My character, I'm not scary, but I do things that make things scary. I don't want to give too much away but everyone's going to love it."

"Puss in Boots": In Theaters Now!

It's the family friendly flick everyone has been waiting for, and now, "Puss in Boots" has made its much-anticipated theatrical debut just in time for the weekend box office.

Directed my Chris Miller, the "Shrek" spin-off is spearheaded by an A-list cast, including Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas, Zach Galifianakis and Billy Bob Thornton.

Recently proclaiming how lucky she was to nab role that inspires so much female power, Salma (who voices Kitty Softpaws) told press, "I?ll tell you, I have a great win in this one. Everything [Puss] does, I outsmart him."

Miss Hayek added, ?How many times do you get a part where the female outsmarts [the male lead] every time in every way? And I?m always one step ahead, and [Kitty?s] actually a comprehensive character. I love her?I love her because she starts out one thing and she finishes as something else. [The movie] has an arc, it has a dramatic arc, and I think that Kitty Softpaws is a great female character, one of the few wonderful ones out there."

Robyn Says 'No Tricks,' Just Treats At O Music Awards

Super Swede will headline the O Music Awards 2, on Halloween at 11:30 on MTV, MTV.com and VH1.com.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf

Robyn
Photo: MTV News

She's opened for Katy Perry, shared the VMA stage with deadmau5 and absolutely killed it at club shows, but Swedish pop-queen Robyn has never headlined an awards show (mostly because, who has?).

That will all change on Monday night, when she takes the stage at the O Music Awards 2 in Los Angeles to close out the show. And just how is she preparing? Well, much in the same way she prepares for all of her gigs: with a maximum focus on making people move.

"I'm planning to play with my band as usual, no tricks, just like what we always do, which is usually just try to make people dance and have a good time," Robyn told MTV News. "I think it's gonna work this time. I'm gonna perform as many songs as I can. We'll see what we'll be able to fit in, but I've been told I get to do as many songs as I want to, so I'm gonna try and fit as much as I can. Maybe not a full show, but a little more than you usually get at an awards show."

Fans can catch Robyn's set — and a special tribute to late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, courtesy of the Flaming Lips — beginning at 11:30 on Monday night, when the O Music Awards 2 are broadcast on MTV. The rest of the event will unfold across a number of the Viacom Music Group's websites, including MTV.com, VH1.com, CMT.com, LogoTV.com and MTVHive.com.

Additional presenters and performers include Kelly Clarkson, Demi Lovato, Alabama Shakes, Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator, Travie McCoy, Midi Mafia and DJ Diamond Kuts.

Oh, and just in case you weren't aware, Monday also happens to be Halloween, so, in addition to blowing folks away with her headlining set, Robyn is also toying with the idea of getting in the spooky spirit. Which means that there's a very good chance you might get to see her rock not only the stage, but a costume, too.

"Maybe I should," she smiled. "I dressed up as Robin, you know, 'Batman and Robin' at this costume festival once in Texas, I think it was in Texas. [No,] Comic-Con. At San Diego's Comic-Con, so I may have to do something like that. I'll think about it."

Justin Bieber's Next Album Inspired By Justin Timberlake

'I'm trying to create a new sound,' Bieber tells MTV News about follow-up to My World 2.0, due 'early next year.'
By James Montgomery

It seems sort of odd to talk about Justin Bieber's next album, given that his new album — the holiday-riffic Under the Mistletoe — doesn't hit stores until November 1.

But, when MTV News caught up with Bieber this past weekend in Santiago, Chile — where he was wrapping up his two-year My World Tour in record-setting fashion — he was more than ready to start discussing the follow-up to his massive My World 2.0 album, mostly because he's been hard at work on it for a while now, and the finish line is definitely in sight.

"What's happening is: get off this tour, and then my [holiday] album's coming out, so I have to go back out and promote that album ... and then after that ... it's almost time for my next album, so then everything starts over again," Bieber told us. "We've already started [working on it], but we're going to be going in every day and working with new people and trying to find the best sound, because I'm going to be recording different styles, different things until I find a solid 15 songs that I love. ... I'm going to be recording as many songs as I possibly can."

True Beliebers Send Special Messages To Justin >>>

As for the release date for the new album, Bieber doesn't know specifics just yet, but he promised it'll be out "soon ... early next year." For fans seeking a sneak peek at the next step in his musical evolution, they've only got to check out his recent remix of Drake's "Trust Issues."

"I loved the song; I thought it was a dope song. I actually cover it in my concert," he said. "I'm going to mature; I'm going to evolve. I don't feel like I'm going to do it too fast or too slow: I'm going to do it at the pace that I feel comfortable doing it."

Of course, that's just one direction he's hoping to head in. Because, first and foremost, Bieber said that on his next album, he's looking to create something entirely new, while still maintaining a connection to his past.

"I'm trying to create a new sound that people aren't really used to hearing, so it might sound weird at first, but it's going to be like when Justin Timberlake did FutureSex/LoveSounds: It was a new sound ... acoustic guitar over hard drums," he explained. "I want to find something that's going to suit me and my fans are going to love and older people will like and younger people will like. But I'm always trying to keep my core fanbase, because the young people are what make everything cool. Old people look to young people, so trying to keep everyone happy."

What are you expecting from Justin Bieber's next album? Tell us below!

Michael Jackson Doctor Acted With 'Gross Negligence'

Fellow doctors take Conrad Murray to task for his treatment of late pop star.
By Gil Kaufman

A day after the pathologist who did the autopsy on Michael Jackson said in court that evidence did not support the argument that the pop icon self-administered a fatal dose of the surgical anesthetic propofol, the defense team for Dr. Conrad Murray appeared to be shifting its strategy.

Lawyers for Murray, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Jackson at age 50 in June 2009, seemed set on their plan to convince jurors that Jackson self-administered a dose of the drug while Murray was out of the room. Let's take a look at what went down in court.

Day 12
The Witnesses
» Dr. Alon Steinberg, cardiologist
» Dr. Nadar Kamangar, pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist

Testimony Highlights
» According to TMZ, one of Murray's lawyers, Michael Flanagan, announced in court that an independent study conducted by the defense found that swallowing propofol could not be fatal. And while lead attorney Ed Chernoff said in his opening statements that the defense would show that MJ self-administered a fatal dose of the drug, the site pointed out that Chernoff could still claim that the singer injected himself with the killer dose after waking up from a fitful sleep.

» Cardiologist Dr. Alon Steinberg said fellow cardiologist Murray displayed an "extreme deviation" from standard practices in his treatment of Jackson based on his review of the case from transcripts of a police interview. He pointed to six distinct deviations from standard care procedures, dubbing each one "gross negligence."

» As independent experts have claimed to MTV News, Steinberg said propofol should only be used for surgical procedures in a hospital setting and never used to induce sleep, something he'd never heard of. Jackson, a chronic insomniac, reportedly used propofol as a sleep aid. In addition, Steinberg said Murray appeared to lack the basic emergency equipment needed and assistance in case something went wrong and that he took the wrong measures when Jackson was in trouble, including not giving the star an antidote — Flumazenil — instead of chest compressions, which were unnecessary. He also faulted Murray for not immediately calling 911, which might have saved Jackson's life, but instead waiting 20 minutes as he summoned the singer's entourage. "Every minute counts," he testified.

» Steinberg had plenty more criticisms, among them shock that Murray did not take explicit notes, another huge deviation from procedure. He said that even if MJ had self-administered the fatal dose, Murray was at fault for leaving his patient alone. "When you monitor a patient, you never leave their side, especially after giving propofol. It's like leaving a baby that's sleeping on your kitchen countertop," he said.

» Pulmonary and critical care physician Dr. Nadar Kamangar later took the stand and agreed with Steinberg's comments that Murray exhibited "gross negligence" with his treatment of Jackson. The sleep medicine specialist told the court that while insomnia is a common condition and that he administers propofol on a daily basis, the dosage must be monitored very carefully — with an automated pump — as its effects can be unpredictable, particularly when mixed with other sedatives. Kamangar also stated that Murray's failure to call 911 immediately was an "unconscionable deviation of care" and that his choosing to ignore Jackson's "clear signs" of drug abuse were completely unethical.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to the charge of involuntary manslaughter. He faces four years in prison and the loss of his medical license. With just a few more witnesses to go, the prosecution could wrap up its case by Thursday.

Nineties pop fans rejoice! Britney Spears has recruited the Backstreet Boys' Howie Dorough to open for a string of South American dates on her Femme Fatale Tour. The gigs will coincide with the release of his first-ever solo album, Back to Me, out November 15.

"I'm so excited that I'm going [to be] joining @britneyspears on several dates of the Femme Fatale tour!" Dorough tweeted on Monday."Can't wait to see all my lovelies in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela!! VIP info will be coming next week."

According to Dorough's site (and as he also tweeted), the Backstreet Boy's initial stint on Britney's tour will kick off on November 20 in La Plata, Argentina, with stops in Santiago, Lima and Bogota before it wraps up in Caracas, Venezuela, on November 28. He's just the latest supporting act to join the worldwide Femme Fatale trek, stepping in the spot once occupied by artists like Joe Jonas, Nicki Minaj and DJ Pauly D.

And when Dorough spoke to MTV News over the summer about his first solo recording, he said it felt good to finally get the chance to show fans a new side of himself as an artist. "I finally have been able to put [my album] together and I'm excited and very, very proud to be able to make this body of work," he told us. "I feel [it's] a total representation of where I'm at right now in my life and [it represents] things that are going on, positive-ness and energy. I think it's really a chance for people to hear me and know my voice."

That's not all, Howie D fans. Next year, Dorough will hit the road again with NKOTBSB — yes, New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys — for a European tour that kicks off in April.

"It's awesome," Dorough told MTV News of touring with NKOTBSB. "It all kind of spun from that show at Radio City [Music Hall]. I think we did something that was a shock factor for people. I don't think a lot of people would have thought the two of us being onstage together would have been fathomable."

What do you think of Howie D opening for Britney Spears? Tell us in the comments!

Frankie Jonas Takes Us Halloween Costume Shopping

Jonas Brothers' little bro talks about his upcoming role on 'R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour: The Series.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Will you check out Frankie's gig? Let us know in the comments!

Beavis And Butt-Head 'Taking Shots' At Reality Shows, Mike Judge Promises

Duo return to MTV with new episodes tonight.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Beavis and Butt-Head

It's been almost 14 years since the slackest slackers of a generation, Beavis and Butt-head, filled the airwaves with their shenanigans, but when the duo return to television with new episodes Thursday (October 27), the MTV they return to is quite a different one.

Creator Mike Judge had to address the changes to the channel when deciding which direction to take the show in. Without music videos playing as regularly on MTV, there is less of an opportunity for Beavis and Butt-head to sit around and comment on them as they did during the show's original run. Reality shows like "Jersey Shore" and "16 and Pregnant" have replaced what were formerly blocks of music videos, and Judge said he wanted the new "Beavis and Butt-head" episodes to reflect that shift.

According to Judge, MTV reality shows comprise 60 percent of the content Beavis and Butt-head sit and watch now. The transition from music videos to reality programming has been an easy one for Judge. "I think it is easier taking shots at the reality shows than music videos," Judge said.

Missed it the first time around? MTV's Remote Control has a Beginner's Guide To "Beavis and Butt-head"!

But Beavis and Butt-head didn't just make fun of the videos they watched. "In the beginning of the first run, I did a lot of what I would call taking shots at the videos," Judge said. "But then a lot of times I would just have them talk about whatever, and it didn't necessarily have that much to do about saying anything one way or another about the video."

Reality TV, on the other hand, is a different story. Judge has found that with the new crop of shows, the material is too ripe for ridicule to ignore. "With the reality shows, it just feels like pay dirt to me," Judge said. "Those shows have just been really fun to have Beavis and Butt-head watch."

Don't miss "Beavis and Butt-head" when it returns to TV Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Britney Spears To Premiere 'Criminal' Video Next Week

'Just saw the final cut of the Criminal video... It's so hot,' Britney tweets.
By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears is ready to release her cheeky clip for "Criminal" next week, Spears and director Chris Marrs Piliero confirmed Thursday (October 13) on Twitter.

"Just saw the final cut of the Criminal video... It's so hot. Can't wait for you guys to see it next week," the pop songstress tweeted.

So when exactly will the video drop? A rep for the singer had no further details about the premiere when contacted by MTV News.

Earlier this month, Piliero stayed pretty quiet about what fans should expect from the video, but he did gush about Spears' performance on Twitter. "Not a whole lot i'm allowed to say about the @britneyspears criminal vid other than that i love this video and can't wait for it to come out," he wrote. "Oh and that she looks gorgeous in it... pretty sure it's cool for me to say that..."

Spears shot the video last month in London, right before kicking off the European leg of her Femme Fatale Tour. The video features Spears and real-life beau Jason Trawick. Little is known about what will happen in the video, but when Spears was photographed carrying a prop gun on set, politicians in the U.K. accused the star of glorifying violence after the London riots. The video was shot in Hackney, which was hit hard by the August riots, and local politicians were upset by what they saw as an insensitive gesture by Spears.

"It is only a music video, but it's images like this, with pop stars glamorizing gangs, which means that some young people ... get drawn in," Hackney's Member of Parliament, Diane Abbott, told the ITV news program "London Tonight." "Britney should really know better."

However, Spears shrugged off any criticisms in a statement to MTV News. "The video is a fantasy story featuring Britney's boyfriend, Jason Trawick, which literally plays out the lyrics of a song written three years before the riots ever happened," the statement read.

What are you expecting from the "Criminal" video? Let us know in the comments!
